Erie Canal 200th Anniversary Collection

Under the governorship of DeWitt Clinton, the Erie Canal  or "Clinton's Ditch" was built, 1817 - 1825, across New York State. Ground was broken for the Canal  at dawn on July 4th, 1817, "near Rome, NY in the level center of the State where digging was easy!"  Along the path of the Canal, Lock Stores sprung up to serve the travelers, workers and horses on their journey.  In Fort Plain, the Fred Fineour Store was located at Lock 32 on the orginal Erie Canal that passed through the Mohawk Valley. This store front is now being installed at the Diefendorf Hall cultural Heritage Center, 47 Main St., Fort Plain, NY. "Diefendorf Hall, an Erie Canal era music hall, once served as the social & cultural center of the village." The Friends of Fort Plain have been working on rehabilitating this historic building over the past several years.

A series of four watercolor paintings celebrating the seasons, have been rendered by Joanne C. Resch, depicting life along the Canal. These paintings are now available in giclee prints and note cards. In commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal, from June through December of 2017, 20% of each print, set of prints and box of note cards sold, will be given to The Friends of Fort Plain for improvements on historic Dievendorf Hall.

The images below are available as 12" x 9", giclee prints, each finished with a cream mat, including a foam core backing and cellophane sleeve, giving an overall size of 16" x 12". These prints sell for $25 each, or $95 for the set of 4 prints. A box of four 7" x 5" note cards (1 image of each season with 5 envelopes) is available also, for $20.

Reflections of the Artist:
W
hat better way to commemorate the Erie Canal as it passed trhough the Mohawk Valley, then to capture its journey through the four seasons.............

Spring:    Life along the Erie Canal reawakens as commerce and travel through the canal locks blossoms alongside newly planted fields and wild flowers.
